Racing’s Night of Champions

The NSW Racehorse Owners Association’s "Racing's Night of Champions", held on Thursday 11 August 2005 was a resounding success with over 700 people attending the function.

This year the event was sponsored by Network Ten, Emirates Airline, Sydney City Lexus, AJC, STC, Racing NSW, Count Charitable Foundation, Merrill Lynch Investment Managers, Macquarie Funds Management and ING, Allianz Global Investors, BT Financial Group and Credit Suisse Asset Management.

The awards for the best performed thoroughbreds of the previous season were presented by the Hon. Grant McBride, MP Minister for Gaming and Racing. Grand Armee took out the for the Best NSW Middle Distance Runner sponsored by Emirates as well as the overall title of the NSWROA Champion Horse of the Year sponsored by the Association.

Fashions Afield, took out the STC’s Best NSW 2 Year Old award; Fastnet Rock the AJC’s Best NSW Three Year Old award as well as Merrill Lynch’s NSW Provincial Champion Horse of the Year. Court’s in Session was the Best NSW Sprinter/Miler sponsored by Macquarie Funds Management. It was a pity that Carol Rose and James Carroll could not be present to accept their award for County Tyrone, winner of ING’s Best NSW Stayer award.

Queen of the Autumn sponsored by the STC and the AJC was awarded to Danni Martine, and Takeover Target won NSW Country Champion Horse of the year sponsored by the Count Charitable Foundation.

Congratulations to all the connections of the above winners.

The Theo Green Award for leading city apprentice went to Kath O'Hara, The George Moore Award for the leading city jock went to Darren Beadman and The TJ Smith Award for the leading city trainer went to Gai Waterhouse. These awards were sponsored by Racing NSW.

The monster auction was a great success as always, including a masterpiece from Joseph Zbukvic, and a private commission from Alister Simpson, two of the Australia’s leading equine artists, a Lexus RX330 and IS200, a Lifetime Experience Holiday Package to the Dubai World Cup for two flying business class to Dubai and Europe with Emirates and seven night’s accommodation at the Sheraton Deira Hotel in Dubai, and five nights aboard the cruise ship, The World.

As always, many thousands of dollars were raised, through the generosity of those present, for Redkite (formerly known as the Malcolm Sargent Cancer Fund for Children).

Spectacular entertainment was provided by Danielle Everett, Michael Falzon and String Diva who were all sensational. Sydney's top party band, Jellybean Jam, then kept guests dancing to the midnight cut-off but wanting more.

The continued support of our sponsors together with all our other donors and supporters helped make the evening a great success.
