BOBS & BOBS
EXTRA UPDATE
With nominations for BOBS now closed the outstanding feature
has been the enthusiastic way in which owners and trainers
have embraced the concept of BOBS Extra.
Of our current 2-year-olds,
2591 have been nominated for BOBS, and 839 (one in every
three) has been nominated for BOBS Extra
as well. That is a wonderful response, given the combined
cost of $1500 in tough economic times.
It is also a very positive
sign that there is a demand for more middle distance and
staying races, BOBS Extra was designed
to strengthen the standard of these races in NSW and over
the next few seasons, as BOBS Extra kicks in, I am certain
we will
see more distance races being programmed, and bigger and
more competitive fields.
Of the current BOBS nominated 3-year-olds,
almost 400 were entered for BOBS Extra – again, a strong
response considering the fee was set at $2500. I know some
owners felt that was
too high but to make BOBS Extra viable, we couldn’t make
it any lower.
Remember, BOBS Extra applies to your horse from
the day it turns 4YO to the day it is retired – even
if it’s
still racing, like Mustard, at the age of 12! So there will
be many opportunities for owners to pick up those BOBS Extra
bonuses. The only restrictions for BOBS Extra, of course, are
that the races must be 1600m or longer, and Listed and Group
events are excluded.
During September there were 55 BOBS bonuses
won, compared with 36 in September a year ago. So every month
Racing NSW is putting
an increasing amount of money back into owners’ pockets,
helping to make ownership more affordable, and at the same
time, giving strong support to the NSW breeding industry.

further information please contact:
