Nominations Extended for BOBS

05 September 2016 | Racing NSW have announced that nominations for Racing NSW's Breeder Owner Bonus Scheme (BOBS) closed last Thursday (1st September), however, the backlog of nominations is still being processed.  As a consequence, the closing date for nominations has now been extended until the close of business this FRIDAY, 9th September 2016 to allow owners the opportunity to participate in Australia’s most successful bonus scheme.

Racing NSW BOBS (Breeder Owner Bonus Scheme) rewards owners who invest in NSW bloodstock. BOBS bonuses are paid out on racetracks all around NSW, adding a payment of up to $20,000 for each win as a two-year-old and three-year-old.  Last season, over $10 million was paid out in cash bonuses and Double-Up vouchers, bringing the total since the scheme’s inception to over $100 million.  To be eligible for BOBS, a horse must be sired by a BOBS eligible stallion and nominated for the scheme.

Further information and a list of the 2016 BOBS Stallions can be found on the following link - BOBS General Information & Forms

NSWROA Submission regarding Operation of the current Whip Rules

03 August 2016 | The NSW Racehorse Owners Association has advised Racing Australia that it makes no submission regarding the number of strikes allowed, or at what stages of a race; we will leave those matters to the professionals.

However, the Association makes this submission only:  that, under no circumstances, should a contravention by a rider of the whip rules result in a protest or an alteration of the placings in a race.

The reasons for that submission are:

The actual effect of the use of the whip by a particular rider on a particular horse is a matter of conjecture:  in the hands of an experienced rider, who maintains their balance, it might have a positive effect; in the hands of an inexperienced rider, who loses their balance, it might have a negative effect.  Similarly, some horses respond to the whip, so that its use has a positive effect, and some horses resent it, in which case its use impedes their progress.  It is in this respect, peculiarly, that a relegation based on these grounds is different from a relegation based on observed interference, or a relegation for weighing in light.  Further, although we would hope that it would never arise, the possibility would exist of a jockey deliberately breaching the rule to ensure that, even if the horse wins, it is likely to lose on protest.  It would be an ironic situation if a stewards’ decision were to bring about that result in those circumstances.

The Association is concerned that, if our submission is not adopted, another massive disincentive against racehorse ownership will have been institutionalised, and, for what benefit?

VALE – Mr John Clift

05 February 2016 | The NSW Racehorse Owners Association (NSWROA) was greatly saddened to hear of the passing of one of our longstanding members, Mr John Clift on 4 February, aged 91 years.

The entire thoroughbred industry, but in particular country racing, has lost probably their greatest ever supporter and on behalf of the NSWROA Committee and our members, we extend our deepest sympathy to John’s family.

Throughout his life John has been involved in all facets of the industry as an owner, breeder and racing administrator.  He was however most famously known for breeding a true champion of the turf, Gunsynd.

John was a great supporter of NSWROA and was a regular attendee at our flagship event, Racing’s Night of Champions, where he thoroughly enjoyed catching up with friends and colleagues each year.

May he rest in peace.
